The Artist's Statement
From a very young age, I have had a love of drawing, colouring and painting. As I matured, I devoted my time and energies to obtaining formal instruction. During this period and up the present, I have continued to hone my skills and drive my growth as an artist by exploration and experimentation.
The latest period of my artistic journey has led me to painting in the abstract. The images in this website represent my work in this area and are grouped under the following categories; Connectivity, Non-Objective Abstractions, Abstracted Landscapes, Abstracted Florals and Abstracted Figures.
These works of art are purely instinctual. They arise from my inner being, which is colour driven and design inspired. Typically, I begin the creation of an art piece with loose and broad strokes and it is then brought together with calligraphy, mixed media and subjected to much introspection.
My latest series in abstractive art is called Connectivity and it began during the time of COVID. The pandemic gave rise to concerns about one’s mortality, the well being of family members and one’s emotional and financial stability. One of the defenses to the disease, we were advised, was to separate ourselves from our usual communities of family, friends and work colleagues. The isolation was anti intuitive to the human spirit. People need to connect to each other physically, emotionally and spiritually.
Thus began the genesis for this body of work. The imperative in me was to interpret the connections in our everyday rhythms of life and present them in paintings.
Each work of art begins with five pieces of paper, painted by me and collaged onto a substrate of either canvas or paper. The substrate is rhythmically incised and drawn upon with lines in various colours and widths. Once these initial steps have been completed, my imagination and intuition take charge and guide each painting to find its own unique story of connectivity.
